WHAT IS AROMATHERAPY?

Aromatherapy is the art and science of using essential oils of plant materials for health and beauty. The early civilizations -Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Chinese, Indian- made use of aromatic plant materials in religious ritual, for healing and to promote physical and mental well-being. Throughout the centuries essential oils were used for their healing applications in the herbal tradition as well as several European doctors and biochemists integrated their essential oil research into their work. Aromatherapy when properly practiced has shown successful results in the treatment of muscular, circulatory, respiratory, digestive and reproductive problems, as well as skin disorders and stress related conditions.

WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL OILS?

Essential oils are considered to be the 'essential' part of the plant, the fragrance component, which is present only in small quantities in the living plant organism. They are found in the leaves, twigs, flowers, roots and bark of plants, as well as in spices and in the rinds of citrus fruits. Their quality is determined by the place of origin, , cultivation methods, weather changes, distillation techniques and socio-economic issues affecting the place of origin. There are many levels of quality for essential oils, the best essential oils are not rectified, purified or chemically altered in any way and are not prediluted with oils, alcohol or any other additives.

HOW ARE ESSENTIAL OILS PRODUCED?

Most of essential oils are obtained from plants by steam distillation producing a volatile oil. Citrus oils are obtained by 'expression' -cold pressing the fruit peel mechanically or by hand. Aromatic materials are also obtained from natural gums, resins and woods.

ESSENTIAL OILS AND AROMATHERAPY

Essential oils are used to treat a wide range of complaints afflicting the human body -skin, circulation, digestive, muscles and joints, respiratory, genitor-urinary, endocrine, nervous and immune system. Essential oils being highly concentrated, biologically-active, which are oil soluble and partially water soluble, are extremely compatible with body / skin function. Diluted in the appropriate carrier, they are applied externally in various ways (see Methods of Use). It has been observed and recorded that the aromas of essential oils, when inhale pass through the olfactory tract to the limbic system (the brain center of memory and emotion) evoking powerful responses. Brain neuro-chemicals are released, creating feelings that may be stimulating, relaxing, sedative, aphrodisiac or euphoric.

With a little practice is easy to formulate an effective homecare remedy, wonderful natural perfume, or special custom blend for a friend or a loved one.
